EPO and USPTO to co-operate on joint classification system<\/strong><\/p>\n

The EPO and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) have\u00a0agreed on the launch of the new Cooperative Patent Classification.<\/p>\n

A new joint classification system, scheduled for introduction at the end of 2012, will be co-managed by the EPO and USPTO. The Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) will use the European Classification System (ECLA) as a basis and incorporate the best classification practices of the USPTO. It will be more detailed than the IPC, to improve patent searching.<\/p>\n

Benefits for patent searchers<\/strong>
The new system will bring advant -ages to patent searchers, the most notable being more consistency between the schemes that the EPO and the USPTO use to classify their document collections. For searchers who already use ECLA, the CPC will seem very familiar.
Initially, the CPC will have a oneto-one match with ECLA structure and content. ECLA currently has approxim ately twice as many subdivisions as the IPC, and therefore breaks down technology into more categories, with fewer documents in each category. Moving ECLA to the CPC will mean that patent searchers using ECLA today will easily be able to search US documents and those of any other patent office that later chooses to use the CPC scheme. It is also planned that the CPC scheme will incorporate the EPO’s internal ICO codes, an additional refinement which will further facilitate the search process.
Concerning format, the only difference will be that letters appearing after the “\/” in the ECLA symbol will be replaced by numbers, e.g.
H04L29\/08A7 may become H04L29\/0817.<\/p>\n

Timetable for implementation<\/strong>
Introducing the CPC will require both offices to make modifications to their systems to support the new classification system. In parallel to setting up the hardware, they will also have to develop field-specific classification rules, which will lay down how examiners and classifiers should classify documents in the approximately 600 specific tech -nical fields of the CPC. These will help to ensure consistency in classifying practice when the CPC enters into force and will serve to support the training of USPTO classifiers. From mid-2012, ECLA will be frozen, as this will guarantee that the symbols are stable for the switch to the CPC at the end of the same year. From then on, revisions of the CPC scheme will be carried out in co-operation with the USPTO.
If all goes to plan, following a transition period starting in 2012, the EPO and USPTO will classify all their documents using the CPC from 2013.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
